Chain Elevator

The chain elevator is located in the northwest corner of the main area of Lower Dorn's Deep. Here you will fight rhinoceros beetles and umber hulks, and will gain entrance to the gnome hideaway.
Monsters: Rhinoceros Beetle, Svirfneblin, Umber Hulk.
Areas of Interest
- Tarnelm Upon entry to this area, you will be greeted by Tarnelm (746, 996), whose years of abuse seem to have tarnished his sunny disposition. He won't trust you until you give him the potatoes you found in level one of Marketh's palace. Give him the potatoes and he'll ask you that you protect his people from the umber hulks. In exchange for doing so, he'll tell you how to get to a "safe haven" once the umber hulks are dispatched.
- Rhinoceros Beetles Walking along the path, you will encounter a few umber hulks and rhinoceros beetles. If you have some extra money you would like to spend, grab one of the rhinoceros beetle shells. You can have it made into an enchanted shield in the gnome hideaway you are about to enter.
- Umber Hulks and Gnome Hideaway Entrance If you stand in the northeast corner for a few moments, a small herd of umber hulks will burst from three tunnels and attack you. This fight can be rather troublesome, as the umber hulks can cause confusion and there are a great deal of them, about ten or so. The easiest way to dispatch them is to have your mage do the work, if you have one. Have him/her cast Stoneskin and put on the Robe of the Watcher, which you got from Malavon. Stoneskin prevents physical damage, and the robe provides immunity to the umber hulk's gaze. Then use the mage as bait. Walk him or her to the northeast corner and wait for the umber hulks to attack, then, while they are attacking your nearly invulnerable mage, the rest of your party can pick them off one at a time. No matter how you choose to kill them, do so and enter one (1997, 765) of the caves--they all lead to the same area--which will take you to the gnome hideaway.
