Upper Dorn's Deep Main Cave (AR6001)
The foreboding dwarven fortress known as Dorn's Deep represents your toughest challenge thus far. Here you will find out what your band of heroes is really made of, as the enemies you will face, for perhaps the first time, are truly capable of slaughtering each and every one of you. Giants, drow, and countless other minions await, but with adequate planning and strategy, you should leave this place with the strength to fight another day. Upon entrance to Dorn's Deep, you will find yourself in an outside area (AR 6000). After disposing of the quaint little band of neo-orogs, who seem to serve as a scaly welcoming committee, enter the cave in the northeast area of the map to begin level one.
In this area you will do battle with ettins and blue myconids, as well as few other lesser beings. If you've ever harbored any great resentment against mushrooms, this is your big chance to lash out--myconids look like really angry blue mushrooms, bent on your destruction. You shouldn't have much trouble in this area as ettins are big and scary looking, but don't seem to pack much of a punch.
Monsters: Blue Myconid, Ettin, Neo-Orog Avenger, Orc Elite.
Areas of Interest
- Cave One (AR6007) Inside it's a rather grisly scene, with human remains everywhere. Oh, and there is also a small herd of ettins trying to kill you (four of them). After disposing of them, search the northern area of the map. Beneath the first string of skulls hanging from the ceiling, you'll find a skeleton (706, 553) that used to belong to an apprentice (you'll find out more about him shortly). Search it and keep the Razorvine as you will need it later.
- Cave Two (AR6008) There is nothing of value in the cave, but you can kill its inhabitants (neo-orogs) for some experience.
- Bandoth's Tower (AR 6014) Inside you will find Bandoth (496, 499). He seems to be a tad uppity, but don't kill him, at least not yet. Talk to him and ask about the area and you'll have the option to trade a quest for information. He'll ask that you find some Razorvine, which you should already have, in exchange for information about the lower regions of Dorn's Deep. Give him the Razorvine for 42,000 XP and he'll give you directions to the upper barracks entrance, and will mention a certain switch that you will need to pull at some point. Ask to barter, and you'll have the opportunity to buy some nice spells, including Feeblemind, Conjure Earth, Fire, and Water Elementals, and Summon Shadow.
- Cave Three (AR 6009) Inside you'll find a few pesky orc elite, but nothing else.
- Exit Southeast from a large statue depicting an elf and a dwarf sitting on a dual throne, you will find the exit to the upper barracks. Make sure you're rested and ready to rock before going into this level, as there will be a nasty fight shortly after your arrival.
- Exit to outside This exit takes you back outside of Upper Dorn's Deep.
