Severed Hand, Level One
(AR5001)

Upon entrance to the Severed Hand, you will emerge in an outside area (AR5000), where you will encounter Larrel's Sending. Not the most pleasant of undead minions, he rebukes your party (especially if a dwarf is present), tosses a fireball at you, and disappears before you can respond. Luckily, his aim isn't very good. This encounter is indicative of how things will be in the Hand--you will be beset at every turn by undead of various sorts, and other monsters to boot. The bright side? Lots of monsters means lots of treasure. The most important thing to remember while making your way through the four levels of the main area and the towers that surround it is this: hold on to the four pieces of "broken machinery" you come across, as you will need them to fix the Astrolabe. The Astrolabe, once fixed, restores some semblance of sanity to Larrel, enabling him to use the Heartstone Gem to aid you. He can't help you without the Heartstone Gem, so make sure you don't accidentally drop it while you're scooping up all the loot in the towers.

In the Main Area of Level One (AR 5001), you will fight shadowed creatures of various sorts, including orcs, orc shamans, ogres, and goblins. There are three traps just south of the entrance, and also a trigger area along the western edge of the map that spawns even more monsters. You will be unable to access the eastern half of the map at this point, but have no fear--you will get there soon enough, and will find a piece of broken machinery for your trouble. But we'll discuss that later. For now there is nothing to do but clear the level, gather treasure, and proceed to level two.

Monsters: Bladed Skeleton, Severed Soul, Shadowed Goblin Archer, Shadowed Goblin Grunt, Shadowed Orc Archer, Shadowed Orc Grunt, Shadowed Orc Shaman, Shadowed Ogre, Shadowed Soul, Shattered Soul.

  1. Exit There are two sets of stairs leading up, one in the northern (1107, 542) and one in the southern (1562, 2060) areas of the map. Which one you take is up to you as they both lead to level two; you just emerge at different points.

  2. Treasure Trove (627, 940) with a Healing Potion.

  3. Treasure Trove (439, 1548) with Two-Handed Sword +2: Defender (3-12 damage, +2 THACO, +10 % slashing resistance).

  4. Treasure Trove (795, 1601) with only gold.

  5. Treasure Trove (922, 2051) with a Potion of Extra Healing, and an Elixir of Health.

  6. Treasure Trove (1253, 1816) with a Potion of Heroism.

  7. Door to Eastern Half You can only get to this door (1707, 1302) by using the elevator on level three. In this area, you will find a piece of broken machinery, which is part of the Astrolabe and needed to complete the main quest in the Severed Hand. See Level 3 for details.

  8. Exit This door takes you out of the Severed Hand.
