Icewind Dale | Walkthrough | Forge Area
Forge Area
(AR8011)

Upon entry to this area you will be accosted by a fire giant. You can either goad him into a fight or be nice. Although being nice will allow you to explore the area in peace, we recommend fighting, because it will allow you to kill off some of the fire giants before Maiden Ilmadia makes her way to your party. Also, this tactic keeps your lesser characters from being attacked, since they are in the rear echelon.

If you choose to be nice, the battle that comes later will be more difficult, as your party will be surrounded on all sides by Ilmadia and her horde of fire giants, and it will be hard to protect any thieves or magic users in your party. The only drawback to this approach is that you don't get to speak with Ilmadia, but she doesn't have anything of importance to say anyway. She just tells you that some of the salamaders are not their allies, and mentions that the boat is being built in a grand plot to destroy a village. If you want to sample the dialogue, you can always be nice, talk to Ilmadia, then reload your autosave.

Insult the first fire giant you encounter and the fight is on. Kill the giants and Ilmadia, who will eventually make her way into the fray, then search her body to find the third of the six badges you will need later. She also has "Black Swan" plate armor (AC 1, +1 to charisma, 10% fire, cold, electrical, and acid resistance), a long sword "Alamion" (4-11 damage, +5 damage and THAC0 vs. salamanders (otherwise +3, +10% fire resistance, -5% cold resistance), a medium shield "Argent" (+3 AC, 25% magic resistance, only useable by elves and half-elves), and an Oil of Speed. After you finish gathering her items, walk south from the entrance until you see a gigantic ship, then head east.

Monsters: Earth Elemental, Fire Elemental, Fire Giant, Fire Salamander, Illmadia, Water Elemental.

Areas of Interest

  1. Ilmadia You will see a small, open-faced dwelling just across the first bridge you encounter. If you chose to be nice earlier, this is where you would find Ilmadia (1870, 2145). Here you will find three treasure-bearing containers.

  2. Treasure Trove (1808, 2103) had a long sword "Bhaal's Fire" (4-11 damage, +1-8 fire damage, +3 THACO, 15% chance target is stunned, not useable by good characters).

  3. Treaure Trove (1882, 2087) had Long Bow +4 "Hammer" (+4 damage, +5 THACO, +1 AC, minimum of 17 dexterity and 12 strength required to use it).

  4. Treasure Trove (1972, 2085) with three Elixirs of Health and one Potion of Magic Shielding.

  5. Exit As you explore the area you will be attacked by salamanders, as well as water, earth, and fire elementals, which require +2 weapons to hit. In the northeast corner of the map, you will find a talking salamander who rants about the evils of prime dwellers, as well as a door (901, 702). The salamander doesn't have any items, but kill him anyway, as we can't have people talking smack about prime dwellers. The door leads to the mines area.

  6. Exit This door leads to the broken temple. Ignore both doors for the time being, as entering the palace courtyard through the front door (in the main area) makes for easier navigation, and enables us to put accompanying maps in a more logical sequence. When finished gathering items and killing bad guys, return to the main area (AR8001) and enter the front door to the palace courtyard.

  7. Exit This door takes you back to the mines.
