Icewind Dale | Walkthrough | Dragon's Eye, Level Five
Dragon's Eye, Level Five
(AR4005)

The fifth level is the culmination of your journey through Dragon's Eye. Monsters on the level include yuan-ti elite, yuan-ti priests and histachii. You also will meet Yxunomei, the world's only topless demonspawn, who is using the Heartstone Gem in her vendetta against an as yet unnamed foe. Some of the battles in this area can be difficult, especially when they involve large numbers of yuan-ti elite, who use their bows with deadly efficiency. You might consider engaging them in melee combat whenever possible, as they are not quite as effective when deprived of ranged weapons. But no matter how you choose to kill them, be sure to check their bodies as you proceed, as they are often in possession of magic arrows. As if the hordes of monsters were not enough, the area is also heavily trapped, so proceed with caution.

Monsters: Skeleton, Yuan-ti, Yuan-ti Elite, Yuan-ti Histachii, Yuan-ti Priest, Yxunomei, Zombie. [Back in Kuldahar] Neo-Orog Avengers, Neo-Orog Marauders, "Fake" Arundel.

Areas of Interest

  1. Exit This exit takes you back to level four.

  2. Northwest Room Kill the inhabitants and search the area. You will find three chests: chest one (312, 214) had a scroll of Non-Detection; chest two (430, 198) had a Potion of Fire Resistance, "Spell Diver", a short sword (3-8 damage, +2 THACO, +1 save vs. spells, +5% magic resistance, 50% of all hits nullify target's ability to cast spells for two rounds); and chest three (505, 399) had three Healing Potions.

  3. High Archer Inside you will find several yuan-ti elite and the High Archer (768, 2361). Kill him and search his body for twenty-three Arrows +2, and "Messenger of Sseth," a magic bow (+1 damage, +2 THACO, extremely fast). There are also sacks containing treasure around the three pillars in the middle of the room: top pillar (727, 2299) had thirty-five Arrows +1, the middle pillar (892, 2437) had nineteen Arrows +2, while the bottom pillar (998, 2620) had eight Potions of Extra Healing.

  4. Torture Rooms You will see two rooms and, in the easternmost, you will find two bookshelves. A Ghost Armor scroll is on the left bookshelf (2897, 2198), while the northern bookshelf (3344, 1989) has a Dimension Door scroll and a Potion of Genius. Along the right side of the bookshelf is a switch (3413, 1991) that opens up the High Torturer's room. You can find his room by walking a few steps back the way you came; the entrance will be to the party's left. Inside, you will find the High Torturer (3255, 2528) and two yuan-ti champions. Search the Torturer's body to find a Cursed Ring of Pain Amplification (-20% to piercing, slashing, and crushing resistance). On the table (3129, 2476) is an Icelance scroll, a Mirror Image scroll, 2 Oils of Serpent's Scales (+2 AC for six rounds), and a Throwing Axe +2 (4-9 damage, +2 THACO, returns to hand when thrown).

  5. Room with Small Throne In this circular room, kill the yuan-ti priests and elite, then search the small throne (1200, 875) for Studded Leather +2.

  6. High Baptist The High Baptist (3021, 1400) is not terribly important, but you can't very well loot and pillage the level without killing the High Baptist, now can you?

  7. Northern Rooms Make sure you're ready to fight before entering, as you'll have to fight several yuan-ti priests and elite. This room is very heavily trapped with six traps in this room alone, so proceed with caution. Enter the door, kill the inhabitants, then enter the door to the left. Walk west until you reach a circular room; inside you'll find a small table (993, 305) with a Potion of Fortitude, and two chests. Chest one (1064, 257) had three Healing Potions, and "Baleful Mail" (immune to Dire Charm, Charm Person, Confusion, Command, and Rigid Thinking. -2 to charisma while worn), while chest two (1340, 374) had two Potions of Freedom, and the Red Knight's Shield (+4 AC bonus).

  8. Yxunomei Make sure you're healed and ready to fight before entering, as the room is heavily trapped, and Yxunomei (3246, 536) and her cohorts are difficult to overcome. Also, be sure to equip the best weapons you've got, as Yxunomei can only be hit with weapons that are +2 or better. She has magic resistance as well, so it's difficult to kill her with spells alone. Kill her and search her body to find the Heartstone Gem. You will receive 13,000 XP for slaying her and retrieving the Gem.

Then search all the chests, most of which are trapped. Many chests contain gold and gems, while the following have magical items: chest one (2954, 306) had the "Dead Man's Face" helmet (+1 AC bonus, immune to Horror and Cloak of Fear spells, -2 to charisma while worn); chest two (3027, 295) had forty Arrows +1, five Translocation Arrows (on successful hit, user transported to next target); and chest three (3288, 260) had three Potions of Heroism, and a Potion of Hill Giant Strength.

Once finished with the looting, take a look at the area map. If you doubt that artists have a sense of humor, take a good look at the main passage and Yxunomei's lair--it forms a nice little snake, stretching from the southwest corner (tail) to the northeast corner (head).

Return to Kuldahar and you will find the town overrun with Neo-Orog Avengers and Marauders. They are killing the town folk, so stop them as fast as you can. Make sure you walk around the entire map and kill them all. Once done making minced meat of the Neo-Orog, go to Arundel's house and speak with the fake (292, 259, AR2112) Arundel (yes, there will be two of them) and then proceed upstairs to speak with the real Arundel (262, 298, AR2116). You'll find that the real Arundel is dying, but, luckily, he finds the strength to update your map before doing so. Search his body to find the Staff of Nature's Wrath (2-7 damage, +1 THACO, can cast Entangle or Flamestrike). Rest, buy and sell whatever you need, and then you're off to the Severed Hand.
