Icewind Dale | Walkthrough | Marketh's Palace
Marketh's Palace
(AR8006-8007)

On level one (AR8006), you will be attacked by shadowed thieves, who seem intent on backstabbing your weakest character. If you don't want to waste potions or healing spells on said character, you might consider making them invisible, or, if your weakest character is a mage, have them cast Stoneskin to avoid physical damage.

Although not a necessity, it helps to enter the large southern room on level two (AR8007) and kill the thieves who inhabit it, otherwise they will come to Marketh's aid when/if he screams for help.

Monsters: Fleezum, Flozum, Ginafae, Marketh, Seth, Thieves.

Areas of Interest

  1. Fleezam Fleezam (353, 881) seems to be a trainer of some sort. You will have to fight him following the dialogue. Kill him and search his body to find plate mail armor "Bathed in Blood" (AC -1), a Long Sword +1 (2-9 damage, +1 THACO), and a Large Shield +1 (+2 AC). Search the chest and bookshelves in the room to find even more loot.

  2. Treasure The chest (304, 819) contains a Morning Star +4 "Defender" (6-12 damage, +4 THACO, +2 AC, +15% magic resistance, +20% resistance to slashing and piercing attacks).

  3. Treasure In the cabinet (435, 671) is two Potions of Cloud Giant Strength, a Potion of Agility, and an Oil of Speed.

  4. Ginafae In this room, you'll find Ginafae (710, 1178), a dark elf who seems to be Marketh's concubine. Ask her what happened to her eye and you'll find out that Marketh beat her for speaking drow to him. She'll also tell you that her brother, Malavon, placed magical wards upon her to keep her from leaving. If you wish to set her free, you can find an Oil of Null Effect in Malavon's chambers (in the Artisan's District) that will remove the wards. However, she will only accept your assistance if you allow Marketh to leave unharmed.

  5. Flozem Flozem (1320, 1291) is none too pleased about what you did to his brother Fleezum in the entrance. Kill him and search his body to find: a Large Shield +1 (+2 AC), a Long Sword +1 (2-9 damage, +1 THACO), and a Girdle of Stromnos (raises users strength to 19, only useable by fighter classes). If you have a bard in your party and the portrait that Callard gave you in the courtyard, have them talk to Flozem before talking to Fleezum. Tell him that he should quit being a tough guy and be an artist. You get 60,000 XP, but you miss out on his gear.

  6. Treasure A container (1384, 1201) with two Potions of Clarity, and a Potion of Insight.

  7. Treasure A container (1546, 1297) contains a Potion of Insulation.

  8. Potatoes In the second room, you'll find what looks to be a kitchen. Search the cupboards (1795, 733) to find a sack of potatoes, which you will use later when you access the chain elevator.

  9. Exit This door takes you back to the courtyard.

  10. Stairs Once finished gathering all the items in these rooms, take the stairs (2148, 957) to level two of Marketh's palace. If you choose not to deal with Fleezum and Flozem and just skip to level two, they will show up on level two and attack you there.

  11. Seth In the first room, you'll find Seth (1871, 716), the halfling fighter/thief who greeted you on the steps at the front door of the palace. However, he won't be there until after you've spoken to Marketh. Hence, proceed to the second door on the right and enter the room.

  12. Marketh You will have a forced dialogue with Marketh (1372, 297), and then can do one of two things. If you want to help Ginafae escape, you can demand Marketh's badge and weapons, and allow him to leave unharmed. If you would rather hack some vengeance out of his scaly hide for what he's done to Ginafae and the gnomes, kill him and search his body for Black Dragon Scale armor (AC 4, +25% acid resistance, +2 to saves vs. spells), the scimitar "Valiant" (3-10 damage, +2 THACO, extra attack per round), a Ring of the Gorgon (cursed, wearer is turned to stone), and Marketh's badge, the fourth of the six badges you need to progress the plot.

There are also five item-bearing containers in the room containing two Potions of Mirrored Eyes, a Mage Dagger +4 (3-6 damage, +2 THACO, +1 1st, 2nd, and 3rd level spells, +3 to saves vs. spells, +15% magic resistance, and Potions of Freedom, Master Thievery, Stone Form, Explosions and Invulnerability.

Once finished gathering the loot, return to the first room and kill Seth (1871, 716), who will try to backstab you. He is carrying Studded Leather +2, a Small Shield +1 (+2 AC), Gauntlets of Elven Might (+1 AC, strength set to 18/51, +1 to saving throws, useable only by multi- or dual- classes fighters), and a Dagger "Salamander's Tongue "(4-7 damage, +3 THACO, +10% fire resistance, +3 to saves vs. poison, 20% of all hits do +1-4 fire damage, user under the effects of Non-Detection).

  13. Exit Once finished with Seth and Marketh, you are ready to enter the Artisan District, where you will find Malavon and the fifth badge, as well as Pale Justice. Use this exit to back to level one, and keep backtracking until you get to courtyard. Take the entrance there into Artisan District.
