Icewind Dale | Walkthrough | Easthaven
Easthaven
(AR1000)

The start of your journey finds you in Easthaven, a small village populated mostly by simple folk who earn their living from the bounty of Lac Dinneshere. Here, you will begin to learn of a mysterious evil that plagues the land, while also mastering the intricacies of game play, such as combat, communication, and the mechanics of the user interface. You emerge in Winter's Cradle, the local tavern, and are immediately greeted by Hrothgar, a hero of some reknown. He seems kind enough, but as lord and protector of Easthaven, it is his duty to warn you to be on your best behavior, or be faced with the unseemly prospect of having to answer to him. After a brief interlude, Hrothgar bids you farewell, but not before beckoning you to speak with him at his home regarding business of some import. Easthaven, although not a thriving metropolis, does hold some persons and locations of interest. Below you will find information regarding important locations and quests. Periodically, we will reference screen coordinates. Press the 'X' key to see the coordinates of your cursor (this will give you the X/Y coordinates, as well as the area number).

Monsters: Fire Beetle, Goblin, Goblin Elite, Wolf.

Areas of Interest

  1. Winter's Cradle Tavern (AR1006) This is the starting point of your journey. You will find general townspeople as well as Grisella the barkeep (589, 318) and Hildeth Highhammer (800, 497), a female dwarf. Begin by speaking to the townspeople. They will tell of strange happenings in the area, and will mention various points of interest in Easthaven. Remember that the responses you get will sometimes vary depending on the race of the character who is speaking. For example, halflings can acquire some free fish by speaking to the townspeople, and dwarves can get a free gem. Be sure to talk to them more than once as they won't give up all their information without a fight.

After speaking to the townspeople, speak to Hildeth. She will tell you of an upcoming expedition. Finally, talk to Grisella. She will tell you of an insect infestation in her cellar. If you decide to help her, and you will if you want anything to drink, proceed to the cellar via the stairs in northeast section of room. Inside you will find a pack of unruly beetles. Dispatch them and tell Grisella of your noble deed to gain 1,200 XP. While the experience gained will not transform your party into a group of superheroes, killing the beetles will at least allow you to become accustomed to the combat system.

  2. Hrothgar's Home (AR1004) Hrothgar (779, 301) has the primary quest for Easthaven, and should be done last. After you are finished exploring Easthaven, talk to him at his home. He will tell you of an impending expedition to the Kuldahar valley, but will explain that the expedition cannot begin until a caravan from Caer-Dinival is safely escorted to Easthaven. He will ask that you find the caravan and see it safely back to town. You will exit Easthaven along the southeastern boundary of the map and will emerge at the orc caves. Once finished, go back to Easthaven and speak with Hrothgar to gain 1,200 XP. He'll then ask you to take a supply list to Pomab; after doing so, return and talk to him yet again for 1,200 XP. If you are equipped and ready to go, you will begin the expedition to Kuldahar.

If you nose around a bit, you'll find a note in a chest (365, 551) decrying you as a thief and warning you not to engage in such activities in Easthaven. If for some strange reason you should take it upon yourself to kill Hrothgar, you will receive a Medium Shield +1. Of course, since he's vital to the advancement of the plot, killing him is probably not a good idea.

  3. Pomab's Emporium (AR1007) Come here after dealing with Grisella's beetles. Pomab (794, 502), a merchant, is intent on sharing with you what a glorious and righteous thing it is to be Pomab, Master of the Emporium. Exchange witticisms with him, then ask to see his wares. Although he has no magical weapons or armor, he does have the basic necessities you'll need to equip your party. If you are of the thieving sort, you can go upstairs and find a few gems as well as a High Quality Dagger (1-4 damage, +1 THACO, at 447, 187, AR1016) and a Healing Potion (367, 152).

  4. Snowdrift Inn (AR1008) The Snowdrift Inn, as you might imagine, is a nice place to rest should you need to do so. Here you will find Quimby the innkeeper (553, 635) and Erevain Blacksheaf (561, 267), a mysterious elf who has recently come to Easthaven. Quimby will speak of Hrothgar's impending expedition, and will offer merchant and peasant lodging if asked. Erevain will tell you of his travels, and will mention that he sensed that something was amiss in his recent journey through Kuldahar. He won't mention anything specific, just that something was wrong, and that one could feel that something was afflicting the land. Should you be averse to elvenkind, you can murder Erevain and get a nice broadsword (4-10 damage, +2 THACO, +2 save vs. wands, +10% acid resistance). Of course, your reputation will decrease and the entire town will attack you on sight, so that is perhaps not an advisable course of action at this point. There is a chest (716, 230) in Erevain's room, which you can pick or bash and get a small amount of gold and a skydrop gem, and another chest (1035, 474) in one of the other rooms that contains a small quantity of gold.

  5. Temple of Tempus (AR1001) Here you may get Potions of Healing, Antidotes, and healing services typical of any temple you come across. Inside you will find Accalia (678, 716), an initiate, and Everard (422, 557), a battle priest of Tempus. If you somehow manage not to offend Accalia's delicate sensibilities, she will tell you of the rituals and feasts celebrated by Tempus in Easthaven. She will also mention Everard, but will not go into any great detail. You may also ask her about the barbarian tribes, or the dictates of her faith.

Everard will tell you of Jerrod, a barbarian warrior who sacrificed himself in order to save his people (his opinion of such a "sacrifice" is unkind, to say the least). You will notice detailed descriptions of various statues throughout the temple, as well as magically protected doors near Everard. At this point, there is no way to open them. Should you be inclined to kill Everard, which again is a bad idea at this stage in the game, you will find Boots of Avoidance, Full Plate +1, and the War Hammer of Sparks (4-7 damage, +2 THACO, 50% chance of electrical damage, 10% chance to stun).

  6. Fishmonger's Home (AR1005) Inside, you will find Gaspar the fishmonger (676, 443). He will tell you of a caravan. You will meet his son in the not too distant future.

  7. Apsel the Scrimshander's Shop (AR1010) Just south of his shop, you will find Apsel himself (769, 1814). Speak with him, and he'll ask you to remove a troublesome wolf (528, 452, AR1010) from his shop. If you do so, you will gain gold, 1,200 XP, and Apsel's Dagger (1-4 damage, +1 THACO). You'll have to bash or pick the lock to gain entrance into the shop. You will receive 1,200 XP for removing the wolf.

  8. Old Jed's Home (AR1009) Here you will find Old Jed (367, 282). He'll tell you the barkeep at Winter's Cradle Tavern has deprived him of liquor, thereby lessening his ability to fish. It seems Jed runs on liquor power, and when his battery is low, his fishing skills dwindle. If you convince him that alcohol abuse is self-destructive behavior, you will get gold and 1,200 XP. If you see nothing wrong with Jed's alcoholic tendencies, you can buy a bottle of wine for him at Pomab's Emporium and return it to him for gold and 1,200 XP.

  9. Jhonen A townsperson seems to be humming a tune. If you speak with him, you will find that his name is Jhonen (1456, 1028) and that he is troubled by maddening dreams. Once you've spoken to him, walk to the southwestern corner of the map, where you will find Elisia (139, 2629), the source of Jhonen's dreams. Talk to her and tell her you know of Jhonen. She will ask that you return a blade to him. Speak to Jhonen, and you will have two options: You can lie and say that Elisia is an evil sea spirit bent on luring him to his death, in which case you will receive three knucklehead trout and a dagger; or you can tell the truth, in which case you will return to Elisia, tell her you've spoken with Jhonen and returned the blade, and receive 1,200 XP and a pearl (which you can sell to Pomab).

  10. Elisia Here you will find Elisia (139, 2629), the source of Jhonen's dreams. If you have not yet spoken with Jhonen, go talk to him about his dreams and follow the directions above. If you have a bard, have him talk to Elisia for a few Token of Faith gems.

  11. Damien Damien (2652, 1945) will be waiting for you just across the bridge . He will explain that beasts stole his catch. If you cross the bridge and head east, you will encounter the goblins who took it. They're still at the fishing hole, perhaps congratulating themselves on a job well done (or enjoying a fine meal, if the condition of Damien's fish is any indication).

  12. Dwelling (AR1013) You will find a winter wolf pelt (415, 159), which you may sell to Pomab.

  13. Dwelling (AR1002) If you are averse to actually paying for a lowly spear (198, 159), there is one in this home.

  14. Fishing Hole (AR1000) This is the fishing hole where the pesky Goblins swiped Damien's catch of the day. Slay them and return Damien's catch to him for experience (or you can sell the fish for a little gold). The goblin elite (2931, 2482) is the one carrying the fish and if you're lucky, you may also find some splint mail on his body.

  15. Exit This exit leads to the orc cave.
