Icewind Dale | Walkthrough | Dragon's Eye, Level One
Dragon's Eye, Level One
(AR4001)

The volcanic caverns of Dragon's Eye represent one of the most perilous areas in Icewind Dale. Here you will fight undead, lizard men, spiders, priests, trolls, and any number of other bad guys. As you proceed through this area, remember that trolls require fire or acid to kill, so be sure to keep any Fire Arrows, Acid Arrows, or Flaming Oils you find. Also, remember not to waste those items on trolls until they are lying on the ground. Once they're on the ground, let loose on them with fire and acid attacks (magic or otherwise) to kill them. Be sure to search the bodies of all lizard shamans as they carry Flaming Oils. Because of the chaotic structure of Dragon's Eye, we will not do a room by room analysis; rather, we will point out important areas, and will note what sorts of monsters you will find as you proceed.

When you enter Dragon's Eye from Kuldahar, you will enter a small outside area (AR4000), where you will be attacked by ice trolls. Unlike normal trolls, they do not require fire or acid to kill. Kill them and enter the door to reach level one of Dragon's Eye (AR4001). There are six primary areas of interest in level one which are detailed below.

Monsters: Bombardier Beetle, Ice Troll, Lizard Man, Lizard Man King, Lizard Man Shaman, Phase Spider, Sword Spider, Tough Lizard Man, Wraith Spider.

Areas of Interest

  1. Two Chests In the room directly above the entrance, you will find two chests. These are important because they contain antidotes, which you will likely need when facing the poisonous inhabitants of Dragon's Eye. In the left-hand chest (479, 846) had fifteen antidotes, and a Protection from Normal Missiles scroll, while the right-hand chest (577, 839) had an Oil of Speed, twenty Bullets +1 (3-6 damage, +1 THACO), and twenty Hammer Darts (1-3 damage, +1 THACO, 15% chance to stun).

  2. Lair of the Lizard King In the northeast area of the map, you will encounter the lizard king (2855, 586). You will see a small set of stairs that lead up to the king's room--do not proceed unless you are rested and ready to fight, as this is a rather large battle, involving a lot of lizard men, two lizard shamans, and the king himself. Kill them and search the bodies. On the lizard shamans we found an Elixir of Health, a scroll of Acid Resistance, a Potion of Fortitude and the Spinesheath Dagger (2-5 damage, +5 THACO). In the large statue of a snake (3054, 425), there was Boots of the Fox (+1 to AC, +40% to rate of movement), two antidotes and scrolls of Detect Evil, Fireball and Monster Summoning I.

  3. Erevain's Body Erevain's body (1868, 2297) just north of the stream and if you are in the southernmost cavern you can see his body, but will have to circle back around to access it. On the body was Erevain's Broadsword (4-10 damage, +2 THACO, +2 to saves vs. wands, +10% acid resistance), Long Bow, Arrows, Chainmail, Medium Shield, nine Acid Arrows, fourteen Fire Arrows, and a journal. If you read the journal, you will discover that Erevain is the cousin of Xan, a mage you may have encountered in the Nashkel Mines while playing Baldur's Gate.

  4. Captives In the southeast corner of the map, you will find two rooms containing captives. Once you've killed the lizard king and all other lizard men, come to this area. A little girl (3318, 2405) will walk up to you and thank you for saving them, thus giving your party 30,000 XP.

  5. Exit Inside the lower room with the captives, you will find the exit (3452, 2264) to level two along the back wall.

  6. Exit This exit leads back outside.
