Icewind Dale | Walkthrough | Severed Hand, Level Three
Severed Hand, Level Three
(AR5003)

Things start to get a little hairy in level three. Here you will meet with more powerful foes, including burning skeletons, who throw fireballs at you, armored skeletons, and a serrated skeleton. The map is divided into two halves, north and south.

In the northern half, there isn't much of importance, but can collect a couple magic weapons. The southern half is fairly difficult, as it is here where you encounter the serrated skeleton, which requires +2 weapons to hit. You will also face armored skeletons, burning skeletons, and shattered souls, which cast Larloch's Minor Drain at will. In other words, make sure you're ready to fight before doing this area. There are four important locations in the southern half.

Monsters: Armored Skeleton, Bladed Skeleton, Burning Skeleton, Shadowed Goblin Marksman, Shadowed Goblin Warrior, Shadowed Orc Chieftain, Shadowed Orc Grunt, Shadowed Orc Shaman, Shadowed Ogre, Shattered Soul, Serrated Skeleton.

Areas of Interest

  1. Northern Treasures Shortly before the passage dead-ends, you will set off a trigger area, which causes shadowed orc grunts to appear, along with an orc shaman and an orc chieftain. Search the chieftain's body (2109, 644). We found Puny's Poker, which turns out to be a magic spear (4-9 damage, +3 THACO). Search the wall to your party's right in a pile of chairs (x697 y967) and you're likely to find another nice weapon, "Misery's Herald," a magic flail (5-10 damage, +3 THACO vs. elves, +4 damage vs. elves, 10% chance of causing Horror).

  2. Pile of Chairs A pile of chairs (626, 1253) has a Shield of the Hand (+3 AC bonus, +1 vs. missile weapons). Be sure to have your thief scout ahead, as there are three traps a few steps west of the entrance. There is also a trigger area here that spawns a burning skeleton, not to mention assorted armored skeletons.

  3. Exit These stairs (1390, 1621) go to level four.

  4. Elevator This is located just east of the main column in the center (2023, 1406) of the map. Follow it and it will take you to the previously inaccessible eastern half of level two (AR5002), where you will be greeted by armored skeletons and shattered souls. Look in the southeastern corner of the map to find some treasure in a pile of chairs (2638, 1860): a Short Sword of Action +2 (3-8 damage, +2 THACO, +1 to dexterity). VERY IMPORTANT: Be sure to follow the door (1875, 1255) in the main column and not the elevator (2100, 1461). It will take you to the eastern half of level one (AR5001), where you will find two containers of treasure, one (2636, 1156) with a Heavy Crossbow of Accuracy (+2 damage, +7 THACO) and the second (2491, 862) with a piece of broken machinery, which is part of the Astrolabe. Grab it, and return to level three, via the door (1707, 1302), to deal with the serrated skeleton.

  5. Serrated Skeleton You will find him (2285, 758) in the large room just east of the main column in the center of the map. He requires +2 weapons to hit, but it's worth it. When we searched his body, we found a Two-Handed, Serrated Bone Blade (4-13 damage, +3 THACO, 20% chance +1-10 cold damage). Proceed to level four.

  6. Exit There are two sets of stairs going back do level two in the northern area (807, 559) and the center column (1259, 1304).
