Patches and Programs
Below are the patches for Baldur's Gate and Tales of the Sword Coast, script compiling programs and GameSpy multiplayer software. Note: Owners of Baldur's Gate Original Saga DO NOT need any of the patches listed. Original Saga has the patches applied.
Baldur's Gate DirectX 8.0 Bug Patch
The release of DirectX 7.0 caused a bug when trying to join a multiplayer game using TCP/IP in Baldur's Gate. This bug did not seem to affect hosting a game, single player or using other connections like IPX. BioWare has released two versions of this patch depending on the language of the game you have. Install this patch if you are using DirectX 7 or 8, and after installing the other patch below.
Baldur's Gate Patch
The Baldur's Gate Patch is available, version 1.1.4315. The readme.txt file lists the bugs that were fixed. Note that it is not necessary to use this patch if you have installed TotSC as it includes all these changes. Size: 4.2 MB (released 2/1/99)
The international version of the patch is also available, version 1.1.4315, which ensures that all the text is in the appropriate language. There is an international readme.txt file. Note that it is not necessary to use this patch if you have installed TotSC as it includes all these changes. Size: 14.3 MB (released 2/17/99)
Tales of the Sword Coast DirectX 8.0 Bug Patch
The release of DirectX 7.0 caused a bug when trying to join a multiplayer game using TCP/IP in Tales of the Sword Coast. This bug did not seem to affect hosting a game, single player or using other connections like IPX. BioWare has released two versions of this patch depending on the language of the game you have. Install this patch if you are using DirectX 7 or 8, and after installing the other patch below.
Tales of the Sword Coast Patches
Tales of the Sword Coast is affected by a Spawning Bug which causes movies or NPCs to spawn over and over, and subquest completions not to be recognized. These all result from the game running out of global variables as described by Ray Muzyka (Executive Producer) in an email. This bug, Windows language incompatibility and various other problems are fixed with the v. 1.1.5512 patches as described in the Readme.txt. Pick the one that is appropriate for your version of the game.
North American English Version (6.2 MB) (released 8/3/99)
International English Version (6.2 MB) (released 8/3/99)
International non-English Version (5.1 MB) (released 8/26/99)
GameSpy Lite
In version 2 of GameSpy Lite, its stability and ability to find open games have been improved. This update does not require a previous version so all Europeans that did not get a copy with Baldur's Gate will be able to install it. Size: 905 kB (released 2/4/99)
A more flexible program, called GameSpy Arcade, is now available to help with multiplayer games of Baldur's Gate and Tales of the Sword Coast. (released 4/15/00)
Script Compiler
The Script Compiler that shipped with Baldur's Gate was mistakenly a debug version that required additional files to work. The following .zip archive contains the final version (executable dated January 25, 1999) of the AICompile program and all its necessary files. Size: 386 kB (released 4/9/99)
Although downloading the above compiler instead is recommended, the following .dll files will make the version of the compiler that shipped with the game work properly (.zip archive). Place these files in the same folder as the Script Compiler. Size: 1.3 MB (released 1/1/99)
The AI Scripting Document describes the scripting language used in Baldur's Gate to create the combat scripts for the characters. Size: 129 kb (released 12/13/98)
Unofficial Scripting Programs
Neale Talbot has created a Word97 template program to simplify writing scripts called BGTemplate for Word (v. 2a). Size: 155 kB .zip file (released 1/12/99)
Brain Hall has decided to release the source code for his
scripting program BG Scriptor so that others can see what they can do with it. He still plans to work on it himself as time permits. Size: 26 kB .zip file (released 2/11/98)
Scripts produced by these programs should be fed into the AICompile program. In the initial release of Baldur's Gate, a debug version of the AICompiler was shipped which requires two additional .dll files to run that can be downloaded here. Put these files in the same directory as the Script Compiler.
