Tales of the Sword Coast Patches

A patch (version 1.1.5512) is available for the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion. Choose the correct one for your geographic location. This patch fixes the spawning bug, the language incompatibility and other problems noticed after it was released as described in the readme and below.

If you are unable to see Ulgoth's Beard on your Tales of the Sword Coast map after arriving at the town, you may not have updated your map files during installation. You will have to do it manually:
When you install Tales of the Sword Coast, we recommend you accept the option to automatically convert your saved games. However, if you don't select this option, you can convert your saved games later using MCONVERT.EXE which is included in the root of your Tales CD.
There have been some problems with dial-up internet connections and multiplayer games. If you are finding you cannot connect to other multiplayer games, add the following line into the baldur.ini file located where you installed the game:
under --> [Multiplayer]
add --> AsyncEnumeration=1

The following fixes are mentioned in the readme.txt file:
Bugs fixed with the TotSC 1.1.5512 patch:
  • Global Variable Bug: It was possible in Tales of the Sword Coast to run out of Global Variables. This would cause many problems including the failure of sub-plots and multiple spawns of NPCs.
  • Sound Volume Reset: Occasionally the sound volume would reset to full volume which could be adjusted, but was not what we had wanted when we shipped.
  • The Bard Song and Turn Undead modes are now exclusive with other actions. Prior to this, you could use these skills and do other things (like attack) while they were active. This has been addressed.
  • The reset of Thieving skills for Bards and Rangers has been fixed.
  • The price on the Horn of Kazgaroth was fixed. It will now be worth more than 1 Gold Piece, as it should be.
  • Killing Karoug before transformation no longer breaks the Balduran's Island subplots. This would cause the plot to be unfinishable.
  • Various spelling and grammar changes to ingame text.
  • The Demonknight can only exist once. Previously re-visiting Durlag's Tower would cause him to reappear and kill Ike. Now he will stay dead.
  • Multiplayer stability has been increased.
  • The Soultaker is correctly marked as a weapon not a quick item. This prevents an item duplication bug.
  • The graphics on spell scrolls have been resized to fit properly on the page.
  • The color on the Full Shield +2 fixed. It looks pretty again.
  • A general price increase of new items has been implemented to reflect their higher value.
Script Compiler Fixes

The script compiler that shipped with Baldur's Gate was a debug version instead of the final version. To make it work, you have to download the following .dll files and install them in the same directory as the Script Compiler. Alternatively, download the complete final version.

Baldur's Gate Patches

The officially supported version of the Baldur's Gate patch (1.1.4315) was released on February 1 (February 17 for International one). Choose the version that matches your geographic location. This patch supercedes the beta patch (1.1.4312) released on January 16. Although the beta patch only altered the dialog for the English version, all localized versions will have their language files updated with the release version patch. The patch does not invalidate previous saved game files. The "Paladin bug" that was introduced in the beta patch and caused a game to crash on saving was fixed in the release version of the patch.

To improve the pathfinding AI, after installing the patch, you can change the Path Seach Nodes entry under [Program Options] in the BALDUR.INI file. This variable can range from 2000 to 32000, with the default being 4000. Raising the number above 4000 will increase the number of nodes in path search at the expense of responsiveness to movement commands. Unless your machine is slower than a Pentium II, you can probably set the value to 32000 and not notice any speed difference.

The following changes to the game were taken from the patch README.TXT file:
Scripting Changes in Versions 1.1.4312 and 1.1.4315:

  • You can no longer turn both Viconia and the Flaming Fist Mercenary hostile.
  • Dual class characters no longer gain 1 hp every level until reaching previous level +1. They now get none as they are supposed to.

Others Changes in Version 1.1.4312 and 1.1.4315:
  • The graphic speed was doubled for the Magic Missle spell.
  • The graphic speed was increased 50% for the Chromatic Orb spell.
  • The Charisma table was corrected in the manual.
  • A table describing starting gold was added to the manual.
  • The Q key for Quicksave was mentioned and explained.
  • The click-drag process for changing the party order was described.
Manual Addenda

The README.TXT file that shipped with Baldur's Gate had numerous corrections to the manual and command card.

In the patch README.TXT file, the Charisma table was corrected and a table was added outlining the starting gold for each character class. Furthermore, the use of Q for Quicksave and the changing the order of people in the party by clicking and dragging their portraits was explained.

The following were omitted from the documentation or were not as clear as necessary:

  • To take a screenshot, press PrintScreen on the keyboard. The image (eg. Baldr001.bmp) will appear in the directory Scrnshot of your Baldur's Gate folder.
  • Arrows keys of numeric keypad (Num Lock off) can be used to scroll the game area instead of the mouse.
  • Left-double click to move individual items, like arrows, out of a stack.
  • If you right-click on one of the formations on the main screen, you will be given additional formations that can replace the selected one. For instance, follow the leader or single file.
  • Experience is capped at 89,000 experience points for Baldur's Gate. The cap was raised to 161,000 in the expansion and will rise further in the sequel. There was not enough time to put every AD&D rule, ability or spell in in the game so it was designed with levels 1-8 in mind, just like a AD&D module.
  • You cannot wear magical armor and magical items like Rings of Protection + 1 at the same time. Ankheg armor is considered magical for the purposes of the above rule.
  • When dual classing, you require 15s in the prime requesites of the class you are leaving and 17s in all the prime requisites of the class you plan to enter. If you have the proper requisites, the new class will be selectable. Dual classes in Baldur's Gate are restricted to the selections available as multiclasses, excluding the triple-classed choices.
  • You cannot run, only walk, but the overall game speed can be increased by changing the AI Update speed with the BGConfig utility.
  • On Page 9 of the [Tales of the Sword Coast] manual, under Quickload, the key listed is <CTRL> - L. Currently this key combination will give you your location instead of a Quickload. To remap this function, run the Baldur's Gate Config.exe located in the directory you installed Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast to. You should then select the tab entitled Keyboard Shortcuts. When you assign it, hold down the <CTRL> key as well as the Z key as you map and it will map to <CTRL> - Z (we recommend this location). This will now be your Quickload Hotkey.
Bugs

The following bugs still appear to be present:
  • The NPC Eldoth has a special ability that allows him to poison arrows, however, he cannot use a bow.
  • For some reason, the permissions may all be lit for your player on the multiplayer screen, but you can't do certain things (resting requires leader permission, area transitions require the appropriately named permission). The only other occurrence of this problem that I've seen was fixed by saving and restarting BG. The problem should disappear on the restart, since that will synchronize the button states with whether they are lit.
  • A number of chests in the Duchal palace cannot be opened by any means.
