Interview with James Ohlen

Who will be writing the manual for BG2 and have they started yet? What will be included in the manual? Will all the spells be described or only lower level ones?

The manual will most likely be written by several members of the design team. We haven't decided what spells will be described in the manual.

How much time do you spend on Neverwinter Nights design? Have you started initial designs on a new game now that MDK2 is complete?

Right now Rob is the lead and only designer on Neverwinter. Once BG2 is done, many of the designers will be moving over to Neverwinter. As to a new game, there is nothing to announce at the moment :)

What is your personal opinion on the 2nd versus 3rd edition D&D rules, and the ease of their implementation into computer RPGs?

While I look fondly upon all the years I have played 2nd edition, I would have to say that the 3rd edition rules are superior. 3rd edition rules are more streamlined, have less exceptions, are more customizable, and are more balanced. The programmers on NWN unanimously agree that 3rd edition is far easier for them to work with than 2nd. The question that my answer will probably spawn is 'why didn't you use 3rd edition for BG2'. Simply put, we wanted to make the ultimate 2nd edition game before the system became obsolete.

Thanks for taking the time for this interview James.
