evanharms06 5/19/2004 8:14:00 AM

Thought the Character Generator was well laid-out, but the Spells selection screen could benefit from a little work. I couldn’t figure out how I was supposed to give my character her spells.

Xristos001 12/2/2003 6:22:00 PM

Ok, so I was having a blast building a character but when I got to proficiency selection, the site f***s up, and won’t skip yo the next page !!!!! I’m aggravated! I was only a few mouse-clicks away from creating the char of my dreams---and now you’ve foiled my plans! In the words of one great evil genius "c’mon throw me a frickin’ bone here...."

¿SheWolf? 4/13/2003 5:48:00 AM

just wanted to say, this is a fantastic site, although the process of putting it all in frustrates me. i’ve been doing all my characters on here, and i love it.

So would you please help me cause I would really like to put in a Bio for all my characters but I have that problem and I love to write specially when I have a portrait to work with then it’s easier. Ya follow me, Well hope you can help thanxs. MoonBaye [email protected]

Suleman Ketharas 9/13/2002 11:34:00 AM

Lord Von Fenal 7/16/2002 7:40:00 PM

Hey, Just wanted to say hey! Was cool looking at other peep’s characters...... i think i build up the Key attridutes in mine up too high now. lol erm good good site goood goood

SARAGORN 4/3/2002 3:23:00 AM

I HAVE NOW CREATED A SORCERER, IS IT POSSIBLE TO USE THIS CHARACTER IN NWN, WHEN IT COMES OUT, AS A CREATURE?

SARAGORN 3/27/2002 4:02:00 AM

DUSKSTEEL YOU CHEATED! YOU CAN’T CREATE CHARACTERS WITH 25 STRENGTH.

Dusksteel 2/28/2002 4:26:00 PM

But I must to admit that this is a REALLY GREAT SITE!

Dusksteel 2/28/2002 4:22:00 PM

All of the characters are not so good here, even the "DragonsBane".I have a much stronger character then him with 25str...and all that but I don’t know how to put my characters with the others!

Beige_Tangerine 2/17/2002 8:22:00 AM

neriana: This isn’t exactly the ideal solution, but you might try using the Character Bank Search Utility to find characters created in the past few days. I tried searching for characters Created from 2/16/2002 and 2/17/2002 and got about twenty matches. Stonecourier is working on some other projects right now, so it may be the best possibility at the moment.

neriana 2/15/2002 5:19:00 AM

Great site. Would it be possible to put "newest characters" up as a category?

Valeman 2/7/2002 5:01:00 PM

This site is the best!!! the concept creating characters is a great idea. to bad we can’t make actual characters to user in our games:( But this site is still the Forgotten Realms site (particularly Baldurs Gate) I’ve seen yet!

Grunnmir 2/4/2002 9:01:00 AM

This is the greatest thing to ever come to anything. If any paladins (well any class) would like to combine bios with me email me at [email protected], I am currently writing a full length bios.

zoggof 11/5/2001 5:20:00 AM

Could you please change "sex" to "gender" so that my computer doesn’t filter it. I cannot create any people.

Echelon 11/3/2001 4:15:00 PM

Is there any way to contact other members in the Character Bank? I want to compliment some of you guys/girls on very excellent Bios...|-FrostByte-|Anything new happening with ToB stuff? It would be great to hear and suggest improvemnets now rather than later...|-FrostByte-|

MasterMonk 9/29/2001 5:49:00 AM

I must say, since I’m new here and have not been really familiar with everything, this is by far, the best BG website i have ever seen. I especially enjoyed creating the characters for this site. Now that i think about it i just have one question. What’s with all these patches and upgrades i’ve been hereing about? As far as i’m concerned, i only know of BG1, TOSC, SoA, ToB, and something called Baldurdash... or something like that. Otherwise, everything if fine.

nate12 8/26/2001 3:16:00 PM

its a good site, but missing something VERY COOL! Get started on the ToB stuff so i can create ToB characters

wombat18 8/23/2001 12:27:00 AM

Re: The voting system. I read below that each logon is allowed to vote for five characters. With almost 14,000 characters on the list these votes are going to be spread pretty thinly - if you want to encourage people to vote, why have any such restriction at all? Maybe instead you could just have one button to click to indicate that you like a particular character, and maybe a second for clicking if you thought it sucked. You could have a top ten AND a bottom ten that way.

wombat18 8/22/2001 3:57:00 PM

Hi there. Love the site and love reading the bios - I have had a lot of fun writing a couple today. However other than the top ten list and the top ten longest list there is no other way for me to find other cool bios than going through the whole list. Would there be any chance of having a link to show the next ten in each list? I also notice that in the bio writing section there is an option to look at a list of 25 example bios. Could this also be available outside the character generation screen? Also, would it be possible to have a link just to edit bios - this obviously wouldn’t affect character stats. Thanks for all your work on this. It really is a fun site.

Wombat, If you click on the Vote! link at the top of the page you can see biographies there as well. Editing bios as a seperate item shouldn’t be a problem. Will try and set it up for you (just a matter of finding the time). (8/26/2001 4:53:00 AM)

Seydaka 8/10/2001 3:28:00 PM

I think this is an awesom Baldur’s Gate website, the best I’ve ever seen. But that’s not the reason I’m writing this. This is to whoever created Dragonsbane(Thule): your biography is incredible! I’ve only been able to read part of it so far because I can’t stay on the internet very long where I am, but I will finish it. You should try writing some short stories.

DGarecht 7/12/2001 1:29:00 PM

Hey there, in regards to the whole not-having-to-go-through-the-entire-list-to-edit-one-aspect-of-the-character thing, why not just make a quick edit for the character bio section? It wouldn’t cause any illegal rule-bending, and it is the last page, after all, meaning it takes longest to access. It’s also the only part where I see any practicality in going back to edit (to fix typos or add to it, etc. like my character, Garecht, needed). Otherwise, the character bank has been and still is an entertaining venture and a good idea overall to kill some time and have a little fun. A "Nice job!" from me to all who contributed in the character bank’s creation.

A bit slow replying I know. OK, will put that on my list. I need to update the itembank with new items first. Will let you know when its done. (7/25/2001 2:05:00 AM)

nate12 7/1/2001 7:39:00 AM

This website is my homepage. And it ROCKS!! -nate12 p.s. look 4 me =) p.p.s. c u in town

Beige_Tangerine 6/9/2001 8:10:00 PM

williamwallace: First of all, I’d second your suggestion of a change that would let you make changes to your character without going through the whole list, but Stonecourier is worried about people making changes to one part of the character and those changes then affecting the next steps. It’s at least worth asking, though. Also, as for the letter size -- that is just the way the font works. It’s set so that every letter takes up a given amount of space, so to squeeze in the extra accent, the rest of the letter must be made smaller. Unfortunately, there’s not really much that can be done about this unless Stonecourier changes the font the text box uses. Actually, this might be possible... Well, I guess I’ve rambled enough for no reason now. I hope I at least partially answered one of your questions :)

Hi Beige! Nice to know you are still around. Seen some of the other stuff you have been involved in. Not sure what font would look right. I don’t actually choose the font on my pages, it just uses the default used here at PlanetBG. Changing the font is possible, just tedious. I would have to go through each text box and set it. Also would have to check what it looked like in Netscape etc. If you like post a few ideas. I am hoping to put in HOW details in the next week or so. (6/13/2001 3:27:00 AM)

williamwallace 6/7/2001 9:01:00 PM

My hats off to the creator of this character bank for his/her stroke of genius :) Very commendable effort indeed. Just wanna put forward a suggestion here...you see, there will be users who make changes to their characters every once in a while. To change a certain aspect of their character, they have to click all the way to the desired page. I reckon if this editing part can be made in such a way that the user can just go straight to the part of the character which they intend to edit...that could save a lot of time. Another thing I noticed when I was naming my characters is that accented alphabets seem to be smaller than non-accented alphabets. Could this be a bug? That’s all for now :)

William, Thanks for the feedback. From my experience with this and other sites, I have learnt a lot. A quick plug, if you are interested in other roleplaying games, try Arcanum. I have set up a similar thing for terra-arcanum.com. This is much more interactive and is done without having to reload the page each time. This can be done. As Beige said above, it would allow people to create characters which were not real (ie you could probably end up with a spell casting paladin or something similar). The idea being that when you edit a character you could choose a starting point and exit out when you wanted. I need to do some work to get the site ready for TOB so I will look at this soon. I was working on something similar for NWN but am now thinking that doing a java applet for it would be much more interesting and flexible. As to the fonts I hadn’t noticed that. (6/13/2001 3:21:00 AM)

Silverleaf4 5/25/2001 3:34:00 PM

I really liked how you can create characters, plus it helped me understand the game better.

Glad you like it, I found that by understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each character type it made the game more enjoyable developing a good mix for my party. (5/26/2001 12:10:00 AM)

Guylus 5/21/2001 3:22:00 PM

mbnvincentnight: Well, when creating characters, it asks which game you’re going to create it from: BG, IWD, PS:T, or SoA. The exp cap is the same as well, and since the spell list selection for my sorcerer was really short compared to actual D&D, I assumed that it was talking about the individual games. ~Guylus~

mbnvincentnight 5/21/2001 1:32:00 PM

I may be new, but I see that most characters generated are of 15-17th level. Come on now this is just stupid. Most people that have characters that high in level have played then for a LONG time. I played a character for over 5 years and he only reached 15th level. And that was hard. This coment pertains to the game itself, not the PC game.

Guylus 5/20/2001 2:17:00 PM

If you choose Half-Elf as your race in the character bank, it won’t let you choose sorcerer as a class. ~Guylus~ Much thanks for fixing that, but now I notice that as a Sorcerer, it gives me 5 spells per spell level up to level 5, then 3 for level 6 and 7, and no level 8 spells. According to SoA rules, Sorcerers should have 5 level 1 and 2 spells, 4 level 3-5 spells, 3 level 6-7 spells, and 2 level 8 spells by level 17. Well, at least the sorcerer I played with those stats I chose.

Apologies. This should now work. (5/21/2001 1:34:00 AM)

stonecourier 5/12/2001 3:46:00 PM

Glad to see the database back and performing extremly well using SQL SERVER.

stonecourier 2/13/2001 1:05:00 AM

Note, the performance of the database is becoming worse. I am talking with Tech about the connection problems experienced. Unfortunately two days of daya has also been lost. I will keep you informed.

Malystryx 1/9/2001 6:06:00 PM

I discovered this place (Character Bank) only about 5 days ago and I was amazed of the thought of just liberally creating good characters! You’ve done incredible work, Stonecourier. The interfaces are easy to use and it is relatively easy to create good characters. My only pet peeve of the site is the countless people who write no bios. The jewel of this site is not the characters, but the stories that accompany them. But lots of people write excellent bios but don’t receive recognition for them. I don’t know how to fix this but maybe it could? Anyways, keep up the good work, and for the record, my characters mesh with some of Gherimax’s for a reason, we create them together.... Ciao for now. Malystryx...

It is quite enjoyable for me to sit back and read the biographies. Every week I scan through the short biographies (say less than 20 letters) and remove the ones with nothing particularly useful (ie unknown, later.. etc). This makes it so people don’t have to look through too many boring ones. Similarly, this is why I put the next character with bio link in. Still only about 25% of people write biographies. A few people have talked about trying to give recognition to people who write interesting biographies, but I can’t say we have come up with a good voting (recognition) system. Afterall, only 4% of users actually vote. Any ideas? The average length is 640 character (guessing 5 characters that is 128 words), the longest is 15373 (3000 words). Perhaps we could have the top ten longest biographies ? It would be pretty easy to make the main page 50% of the time, display the top ten and 50% of the time display the top ten longest. Here they are for your interest. Id Length 4798 15373 4377 14569 737 9929 1752 7196 92 6564 265 6393 4528 5647 6333 5484 6392 5394 4538 5074 (1/9/2001 10:55:00 PM)

stonecourier 12/2/2000 1:07:00 AM

I am experimenting with a 3E version for Neverwinter Nights and AD&D in general. I haven’t got very far yet, but if anyone is interested in testing it out email me.

Whimper 12/2/2000 12:02:00 AM

Wow! I love the changes you implemented, and fast too! I think I understand the voting system now... but how often (if ever) are the scores reset? Monthly? Bi-weekly? It would seem that characters that are on the top ten would end up staying there simply because they get more exposure (eg. I voted for Gromnir because I saw him on the top ten, so he ends up getting even more points.) Secondly, what I had meant by ’tagline’ earlier, was that on the random character display (on the home page), along with the other basic stats right above the line "Show Me More" there could be a teaser introduction to the character’s bio (maybe about 100 letters or so). This could either be just the first part of the bio reproduced on the random char. page, or it could be a seperate field in the char. generation process. . . like this: Short Bio: "Gromnir is an adopted clansman of Clan Bloodraven; he is wise and honourable, and a calculating, deadly foe" Long Bio: "I hate the night before battle. It is only just past midnight and yet, I don’t think that there is a single soul sleeping in this vast camp. Etc. Etc. . . ."

Glad to see you are back, and like the changes. :) The changes were pretty small, but add real value. I hadn’t thought about resetting the biography votes. It is quite easy to do. Very few people actually bother to vote (about 4%). Perhaps I could have most popular character of the week as well (ie look at the date/time when the vote was cast and only considers it if the vote was cast in the last week). Other things I am thinking of doing is having more information based on your logon (ie when you logon it could say since your last visit : xxxx entries have been posted in the guestbook, xxxx characters posted and xxx changes have been made to the program and xxxx people have voted for your characters). I was also thinking about allowing people to put paragraph markers in their biography to make it more readable. Another thought would be perhaps it could automatically remember you next time you come here (the program uses a cookie to remember which character and logon you are currently using so I would just have to make it non-expiry). I have made the change for the bio bit (I screwed up the main page for a while - I don’t have a test environment - sorry). (12/2/2000 4:09:00 AM)

DaSterlingRat 12/1/2000 6:28:00 PM

I will second Whimper. I would like to request the option to search the character list for those characters with Bio’s. What is truly interesting (for me, anyway) is the Bio’s that people have written to go with the stats and figures and such. This is a great tool for new players that aren’t sure of some things, but I like it because of the Bio’s.

Good idea! I hadn’t thought of that. I have put it in the search criteria. Hope it is what you wanted. I have also put in the next/previous with bio feature in the character summary. This doesn’t slow the program down too much. I have also put the links at the bottom of the page so you don’t have to scroll as much. I also find some of the statistics quite interesting. People just don’t seem to like the short races, evil in in the minority and women are outnumbered 4 to 1. Note the comments below for Whimper. (12/1/2000 8:22:00 PM)

Whimper 12/1/2000 3:01:00 PM

Kudos on a very interesting site! I like the search engine, and statistics. I’m not quite clear on how the voting system works yet, though. Eg. Does "Vote #5" mean I vote for this char. to be a 5 on a scale of 1-5? Or does it mean this is char. #5 out of my top 5 favourites? Also, I think a short bio/tagline would be something to add to the summary screen. I find the bios to be the most interesting part of the site, and it’s both tiring and frustrating to load up a randowm character just to find out that they haven’t written anything in the bio. Also, as far as "offensive" material in the bios, wasn’t the BG series designed for "teenagers and older" -- not children and teenagers? Not that I condone anyone using this site to post hate literature, porn, or vulgar language, mind you. But people should be able to use their own common sense.

I wasn’t really sure the best way to implement the voting system. I had a talk to the beta testers and this is how it was set up. Each logon can vote for 5 characters. You cannot vote for characters created by your own logon or if you haven’t created a character of your own. You cannot vote for a character more than once. #1 is your favourite character going down to #5 being your least favourite (but still favourite). By voting for #1, the character is given 5 voting points, #2 - 4 points, #3 3 points, #4 2 points and #5 1 point. The points are then summed up and the top ten is based on the characters with the most points. I will put some details explaining this on the voting page. 99.9% of people have been really great. I have really enjoyed reading the biographies as well. As to the comments on posting biographies, unfortunately this person was posting biographies with explicit erotic sex, graphic details about eating faeces plus a few other things thrown in. He was also rigging the voting system (this has been made harder to do now). You can see all characters with bio’s by going to the voting page (click on the Vote!) at the top. I will also look at making it display some note on the random character generation if they have a bio. It might be able to make it so you can click "next character with bio" or the summary sheet or something similar. When you mean taglines - do you mean for each logon like people have on the BG chat site? (12/1/2000 7:53:00 PM)

stonecourier 11/25/2000 3:08:00 PM

There seems to be a particular individual that wants to post inappropriate biographies and generally misuse this site. Just a quick note to indicate that I can and will delete any logons which I believe are deliberately going out of their way to post material designed to offend others. As the Baldur’s Gate Series of games was designed for children and teenagers, please keep the content appropriate. If people find a biography which is offensive, email me the character number and I will look at it.

Æiou (y) 11/24/2000 3:56:00 PM

Interesting thing, this character bank! The vowels are pleased........ =)

Beige_Tangerine 11/23/2000 1:19:00 PM

First of all, Happy Thanksgiving to anyone who might read this today... Second, I’m using Stonecourier’s program to create all the BGII joinable NPC’s under the login: "SoA_NPCs". If you perform a search for characters created under that account, you should find them all. I’m not finished yet, but I think I have about 10 characters done so far. Admittedly, there are some problems (WP’s, thieving skills, Aerie’s illegal class/race combo, XP totals, Minsc’s and Anomen’s too-low stats for their classes, and the fact that I haven’t picked spells for anyone), but I will try to clear those up as soon as possible. Hopefully, though, someone will find these characters useful.

Thanks Beige, I was wondering about where they were coming from. I will send you an email and I can change their stats manually. (11/23/2000 11:07:00 PM)

relyod 9/26/2000 10:42:00 AM

Hi I love the idea of this character generator. One thing... I’ve always created a fighter/specialist mage, which didn’t seem to be an option. (Fighter/Conjurer in IWD has all the advantages of a sp. mage and conjurers in IWD have no spells they loose out on - cause there’s no "greater divination" spells implemented. this is a ?bug? )

Hmmm, I guess I must have forgotton to put that in for IWD and BG games. Should be a pretty easy fix. Stay tuned... (9/26/2000 2:35:00 PM)

Dragonsbane 9/24/2000 6:57:00 PM

I would like to thank the creator and beta testers for putting this together. It is fun to be able to "see" my characters summarized so completely and to be able to see what some of the others have done as well. I really enjoy the biographies of some of the characters and would like to see a biography only option in the future maybe? It is really the most individual part of the builder. The talent of some of the top ten characters has been great (eg Gromnir). Again, enjoyed and enjoying. Dan - aka Thule Dragonsbane

Thanks Dan, it has been an enjoyable experience setting this up. I have found the biographies most entertaining as well. You can see characters in summary format by clicking on the Vote! option under the top ten or they can be viewed when you enter your own characters biography. I have made the viewing much better by making it based on a drop down list instead. You can expect quite a few improvements over the next few weeks (sigh… particularly with reliability when we change over to the new database server). Expect lots of Shadows of Amn information to be added as well. I will be adding the ability for the program to let you know of changes which have been made shortly. Thanks for visiting and I should also say anyone is welcome to make suggestions here or via email. (9/26/2000 2:17:00 AM)

Beige_Tangerine 9/16/2000 11:12:00 PM

I just want to take a moment to thank Stonecourier for putting this web page together. Being the powergamer (but *not* cheater, mind you) I am, I love the site. Participating in the beta test and helping to make suggestions and improvements was great, too. Thanks again to Stonecourier, and I hope everyone enjoys his program!

stonecourier 9/15/2000 3:56:00 PM

I would like to thank all the beta testers who helped me get most of the bugs out of the program and those who suggested improvements and changes. Whilst this program is incomplete due to some of the rules being unknown at this stage, it will be improved over time when Baldur’s Gate II comes out. Thanks for using the program and visiting Baldur’s Gate Chronicles. If you find a bug or want to suggest an improvement, you can leave a comment here.
