Lady of Pain

The power that resides in Sigil, the City of Doors

If you are an avid adventurer of the Planescape setting, or even just a reader of the Planescape: Torment site, you should have heard of the Lady at least once. She is, without a doubt, the most powerful figure in Sigil, if not in the whole Planescape universe.

The Lady, as she is most commonly called, is a power. She has no house, temple, or palace, nor does she have any worshippers. The leatherheads that do make prayers in her name, regret it. Sometimes, a cutter may see her drifting throughout the streets with her dress barely brushing the ground. Of course, just cause she's visiting the Cage (Sigil) doesn't mean that you can go up and have a casual conversation with her berk! She doesn't talk, and those bashers barmy enough to interfere find themselves hurting with a flash of her gaze. Those who inhabit the Cage view her with fear, for she is the sole protector of Sigil.

The Lady has the power to open and close the doors of Sigil. Within this place of neutrality lies portals leading to locations all over the multiverse; all a berk has got to do is find them. Everyone comes to Sigil at some point during their travels throughout the planes. Though, there is one specific group that are not allowed access to the Cage. That group would be the other powers, gods, or deities. The doors are locked to them. Because of this, the powers grow frustrated. They hunger for more, but the Lady denies them this right. This is truly proof of the Lady's power.

The Lady of Pain is as important to the Planescape universe, as air is to the human being. Player characters do not interact with her. She has no missions for them, nor does she grant them powers. But just because you don't meet with her, doesn't mean she isn't an important figure. Without her, the Planescape setting doesn't really exist.

The Lady doesn't have stats like others in the Planescape setting. The creators of the setting didn't see it fit to make her into a simple character sheet. By lowering her to that level, the mystique of the Lady disappears. By giving her a specific number of health points, and allowing her to be assassinated by a player character, would quite simply destroy the mystery that surrounds the Lady. She is that which balances the Planescape universe. With that said, the significance of the Lady of Pain is brought into the light.

Lady of Pain

Mazing

The Lady of Pain has the ability to "Maze" people to punish them. As an integral part of Planescape, it is featured in the game. Causing a major ruckus in Sigil, will get you mazed. Chris Avellone (Lead Designer) described it as:
The Lady of Pain has the power to "snip" away small portions of Sigil, reshape them, and then dump them in the Ethereal Plane. She uses this as a means of imprisoning people in Sigil that either offend her (by worshipping her, for example) or threaten the stability of the city. These mazes are extradimensional prisons. Every maze has a way out of it, though they can be hard to find...some argue that these exits are put in to further torment the prisoners.
