One of the characters may be recognized from the Darksun world. She
was one of the main characters in the Prism Pentad by Troy Denning. From
a little role-playing venture that involved rewriting part of Denning's
work, the sorceress ended up crossing the path of one of the powerful
denizens of Athas. By name, that was Talisman Ev'ris, the product of a
female Phoenix and male Sun Dragon mating. While on her way to the Pristine
Tower (the 3rd book of the Pentad), Sadira rode on a caravan to Nibenay.
By some cosmic will of fate, Talis--in human form--was also on that caravan.
Of course being the shaded and silent character that he is in most people's
company, the Phoenix Sun Dragon was the partial observer of events. He
listened, but seldom spoke. Years heaped upon centuries had taught him
that people would not listen to wisdom. Find the right ear, then words
would be pure.
Such was the case when he supported Sadira's claim that the caravan was
in danger. Serious realization came too late for the caravan master. As
for Sadira, she knew by that time why they were being attacked by such
an unlikely force of forest halflings. In the learned ways of one who
has lived long and traveled far, Talis knew as well. Unfortunately for
him, he was in destiny's palm. His own compassion and will to do what
he can for others sealed his fate. He went with Sadira to face Nok, and
in turn damn himself as hand-less observer cast down the falls of fate.
Suffice to say, Talis journeys with Sadira to the Pristine Tower and back
again to Tyr with more than one headache. Her methods were naturally worrisome
to the Sun Dragoon, but then again they were naturally worrisome to most
other people as well. Committed to his role as one who cannot change what
was going to happen, Talis tried to channel himself into a sort of guide,
rather than a powerless witness. For better or worse, because of his effort
or no, he succeeded. Sadira registered his presence as one who could help
her cause. He was an able person with a will in the world, not a mere
eyeball that stayed in the shadows to watch. Eventually this recognition
would filter into her insistance that he be her mentor. And again, his
personality betrayed him to fortune. His will to be a participant led
him to assent. By teaching and training her he could make his mark. And
they would travel, as travelling is an efficient mode for teaching and
learning alike.
