how to get any character through the first dungeon easily

 

*** MAJOR SPOILERS FOR FIRST DUNGEON ***

 

Any character, and I mean any character, no matter how weak, how puny or how mentally challenged, can easily get through the first dungeon. The trick is to let Imoen, Jaheira and Minsc do all the work for you. Your character just has to tag along and watch the fireworks.

The basic strategy is to have Imoen memorize Fireball and Jaheira learn Protection from Fire. Have Minsc equip the two-handed sword, splint mail and a helmet. Just before any battle, cast Haste and Protection from Fire on Minsc. Send Minsc into the middle of the battle by himself. When all the baddies are occupied fighting Minsc, throw a fireball (or two, if necessary) right on top of Minsc. Voila! Fried creature deluxe!

You can also learn and cast Defensive Harmony and Haste; this will make the battles a little easier. Might as well have Imoen learn a couple of Acid Arrows while you are at it; you might need them occasionally just to minimize the amount of time it takes to take down whatever monster you happen to be fighting.

This walkthrough follows my character of Raspin Caine, a mage, as he wanders through the first dungeon in Baldur's Gate II.

Level I

 

Imoen, Jaheira and Minsc

Imoen finds and disarms trap in Jailer Room and gets magic dagger and three potions. Raspin gets key to Jaheira's cell and unlocks her cell. Jaheira joins up with group.

Raspin visits Minsc cell and gets him mad enough to break open the bars. Minsc joins up. Get rest of stuff from Jailer Room.

Minsc equips two-handed sword, splint mail and helmet and also carries katana as it is worth more than most average items.
Jaheira equips staff and chain mail, learns Protection from Fire, Defensive Harmony, Healing Spells and whatever else suits your fancy.
Imoen learns Identification, Acid Arrow, Haste and Fireball.
Raspin equips dagger.

Rest in room where everyone was caged in order to memorize new spells.

The Lightning Machine

In southwest of room is corridor leading southwest and then back northwest to Lightning Mephit Generator.

Face a lightning mephit in room to southwest of starting cells. Turn off lightning machine unless you want to earn 420 experience points over and over and over again. Minsc can take care of the Lightning Mephit by himself. Someone else (such as Raspin) should turn machine off.

Aataqah

Continue to northwest from Lightning Machine Room into open area.

Go northwest into room and talk to Aataqah. Answer 1-1-1-1-1 in order to generate an Ogre Mage and maximize your experience points; other answers seem less satisfactory (either generate almost worthless gibberlings, or nothing at all).

Goblins I

Enter corridor directly west of Aataqah.

Just prior to entering west corridor, cast Haste, Protection from Fire (on Minsc) and Defensive Harmony. Send Minsc down corridor. When he engages Goblins, lob a fireball into midst. Properly placed, it should kill all of them easily. clean up the debris in the hallway from the goblin mess. Lots of bows and arrows, sometimes potions and scrolls. Occasionally you can find 5th and 6th level scrolls among the goblins.

If for some reason the goblins are not in the corridor, just Rest. That will usually trigger them.

The Containers

Enter first doorway on left as you head north up hallway.

Rush up corridor (while your 'Haste' spell is still iin effect) into first room on left to kill two mephits. After they are killed, find Quarterstaff+1 (give to Jaheira), Short Bow and arrows (give to Imoen), and then go back down hallway to clean up goblin mess (more arrows and some Long Bows).

The Guardian Golems

Keep going North; Guardian Golems cell is first room on left.

Rest & Save, then cast Haste and Defensive Harmony. It is surprising how fast these golems usually fall. I get right next to them before I cast my spells (and then save, of course). Note that if you don't kill them now, they will be triggered when you enter the 'pretty bedroom.' You will then have to face them on their terms instead of yours.

Goblins II

Two groups of Goblins hang out in this little maze just northeast of the Golem cell.

Take out the two groups of goblins in the halls just to the northeast of the golem cells. You may have to rest to trigger them. Collect the loot. Haste, Protection from Fire and Fireball tactics work great here.

Rielev

Backtrack to the door to the Golem cell. Continue to the northeast to find Rielev.

Visit Rielev and agree to release him. Grab the stone used to activate the Sewage Golem. There should also be a sling and some stone in this room that you can give to Jahiera. Now Jaheira and Imoen both have missile weapons so they are less likely to get into melee trouble.

The Sewage Golem

Go back to the door to the Container room. Head directly northeast from this door to find the Sewage Golem.

Visit the Sewage Golem room. Collect the stuff in the room (Long Sword+1, Scimitar, some potions and scrolls). Give the stone to the Golem so he will open the previously closed doors. Once I cast Haste and followed him around to see if he really 'did something.' Well, he really does do something---he opens the doors. Not very exciting.

I recommend resting and saving before giving the stone to the golem. Once he is activated, you can't rest until he is done (which takes a little while).

Central Sewage

From the Sewage golem room, head back south to Aataqah's room. Go northwest and then northeast up hall to reach Central Sewage.

Follow the Golem's route to the main center (backtrack to Aataqah's room and then go norhwest). You will have to kill three goblins in the corridor just opened. Kill the Otyugh in the main room; may need a Haste for this battle as he tends to slow fighters down. Open the three chests in this room and grab loot---another splint mail (give to Jaheira).

While you are here, kill the Smoke Mephit in the corridor to the south.

The Dryads

From the bedroom, head southeast into a meadow like area to meet up with Dryads.

Talk to the Dryads (1-3-1-1).

Continue south to find the 'pretty bedroom.'

Good stuff here. Also lots of traps. If you didn't kill the Guardian Golems earlier, the alarm will trigger them and they will wander the dungeon until they find you.

The Duerger Dwarves

Head northeast from library; rest and save in corridor that heads northwest.

This would be a good time to rest; the Duerger Dwarves are probably the toughest fight in this dungeon (but no fight is really that tough unless you are careless). Cast the standard stuff on Minsc and send him against the Duerger Dwarves. You may get pretty banged up but you should live through it. Have Imoen cast some Acid Arrows once she has used her Fireballs. Collect all the stuff in the Duergar room. Give Mail of the Dead to Minsc.

Cambion

Head northeast from Duergar room and then southeast.

Exit Duegar room to northeast and disarm trap in corridor leading southeast. Kill Carmion in his weird room and collect his good sword. Don't forget to mess with the switch thingie or you may get pretty frustrated.

The Djinni

Head north from Cambion and enter first door just before Duergar room

Rest and Save first; you can't rest inside Djinni area.

Enter area and kill two mephits at first intersection. Take a left and kill two mephits down boardwalk. Collect scroll at end of boardwalk. Go back to intersection and do the Minsc Haste/Protection spell stuff again. Send Minsc northwest into area with the five mephits. After the fireballs, he may still need a little help. Go northwest and talk to genie; agree to find flask for him.

Dryads Again

March back to dryads; march back to Genie; march back to portal (whew...)

Return to dryads; they will thank you for the acorns and ask you to return them to their queen. Talk to them again and they will give you Genie flask. Return to genie to get good two-handed sword and equip Minsc.

Find a portal (either northwest of master bedroom or northeast of original cell) and enter to second level.

Yoshimo

Yoshimo meets you right after you exit Portal.

Have Yoshimo join; have him grab spell in chest in west part of room. Rest, cast Haste, then go kill all the Mephit Portals.

Mephit Portal Room

Go northeast from where you met Yoshimo (only exit other than Portal).

Don't bother attacking Mephits; just kill the Mephit Portal Generators.

Have Yoshimo collect all stuff in the room. Raspin should now have five of the six wands necessary. Some more stuff to collect in this room. Either just prior to entering or just after exiting, Jaheira will have her 'Khalid' episode.

Cloning room is western-most door on North wall.

Go north into remain door and kill escaped Clone and Assassin.If you don't kill the clone fast enough, she will kill the assassin before you get a chance and thus you will lose a whopping 14 experience points. (Is that a bug?)

The clone has the last wand key (you should have six wand keys by now).

Continue northeast across bridge and enter Pedestal Room

Enter next room and line up party against wall. Just use ranger fire to kill the three Duegars in the room. Then have Crispin insert keys into each pillar along northwest wall. Get ring of Protection from statue on north wall and give to Jaheira. Wait just in front of door on northwest wall and rest.

Kill the goblins in the first room and the Duergar Dwarves in the second. Should be getting pretty easy by now. Only a couple of nice items here; Girdle of Bluntness is the best of the lot.

Fennedan's Cell

Head back to Pedestal room; take middle corridor heading south east.

Meet Fennedan; loot first room; open door; kill Fennedan; loot second room. This becomes really easy after you've done it 50 or 60 times.

The hard part is allocating all the loot between the characters.

I give the main character (in this case Raspin) the wands and the magic items; Minsc gets the Magic Weapons and heavy armor. Yoshimo gets all the 'red' spells while Jaheira gets all the 'blue' and 'white' spells. I like to segregate the spells by color because if you have more than one on a specific type, they will 'stack' together which saves you a slot.

Same is true for potions and gems.

Summary

OK, so how'd we do? Results are below. Wow, Yoshimo seemed pretty worthless; plus you don't get any experience for 'saving' him like you do for saving Jaheira and Minsc. Well, he makes a pretty good pack horse anyway. And once you lose Imoen, he makes a damn good thief.
