Zoras was born into a minor noble family in the region of Calimshan, to Lord Arkrienas and Lady Ilryth of House El'Khadath. From birth, he proved to be a child of insatiable curiousity, forever wandering into rooms that weren't locked and poking his nose into his father's tomes and manuscripts. While other parents may have quickly lost patience in such a bothersome child, Lord Arkrienas recognised his young son's scholarly talent, and as soon as he was old enough, sent the boy to be apprenticed to Thazid the Venerable, a wizened old mage that lived just outside of the town that the El'Khadath household was based in.
Under Thazid's tutelage, Zoras grew quickly to love the usage of magic, the pure fascination and joy that came from the pulsing energy that coursed through him with every spell. He absorbed all that Thazid taught him and more, often 'borrowing' a few spellbooks from his master's library to study them in his quarters in secret. Unfortunately, it was this very desire for more knowledge that eventually proved his undoing. Intrigued by what his master had told him about the Dark Arts of magic, Zoras had asked Thazid to teach him such, but the old man refused, saying that such knowledge would only be taken up by those of evil heart and intent, for they could never be used to aid the cause of Good. The explanation proved to be insufficient for the young mage, and in disregard of his teacher's warning, one night stole into the library and went to a locked section of the tower that he had previously remained away from: A collection of evil and demonic works, kept secreted there by Thazid so that their contents would never see the light of day again. It was there that Thazid, awakened by strange noises, found Zoras, surrounded by the vile and grisly trappings contained within, reading aloud from a tome bound with human skin so that he might learn its secrets. Thazid did not kill Zoras, as another might do finding his student working an evil spell in his very home, but he banished the young man from his sight, laying a geas upon him so that he might never return there again. With naught more than the clothes on his back and a minor spellbook in his possession, Zoras set off for home. But the news of his deeds had already preceded him, and the townsfolk, along with his own parents, condemned him for 'succumbing to the Dark'. Banished from the town and disowned by his parents, Zoras barely escaped his home with his life, fleeing away into the darkness of the hills, where the torches and lanterns of the angry mob dared not follow. Since then, Zoras has been wandering the Realms, offering his skills to others when the need for money presses hard upon him. He still bears his family and hometown no grudge, knowing that they would have done no other for another found doing the same, and though he misses his home at times, he ultimately does not regret the decision he made. The advances in his magic he had learned since then more than made up for his loss. He still continues to study and learn from all the different schools of magic, but the study of Dark Magic has left its mark upon him. While he would never resort to killing another for the magic or knowledge they have, there is little else he would stoop to doing to accomplish his goals. Recently, Zoras has found himself in the Sword Coast, where news of a grand conspiracy in the region reached his ears. His damnable curiousity rising again, Zoras started out for the city of Athkatla, where he might find more information or perhaps others whom would be willing to accept another adventurer into their fold. |
