Solo Notes & Guidelines Page

rules I used for my solo character

My solo character does it almost (but not quite) completely alone. I let myself do the 'catch and release' tactics when it comes to meeting NPCs. What this means is that I will allow them to join my party so that I can gain the experience points, 'borrow' any equipment I might think is valuable, and then release them immediately. I will not allow them to participate in any events (battles, lockpicks, memorizing spells) that would allow them to gain any experience points.

In the case of all the NPCs in the Irenicus Dungeon, I just met them, searched them, thanked them and sent them on their way. If you check the stats under information for my solo character, you will see that he is responsible for 100% of the kills (92 victims) and 100% of the experience points.

The downside is that you have to be very selective in what you haul out of the dungeon. Generally I just grabbed the magic weapons and items and left the rest.

I also used a LOT of potions (can't carry them all anyway) and did a LOT of resting. It was a little irritating that sometimes the rest lasted more than two days but if you don't have a Cleric or Druid, you can't take advantage of any innate abilities (such as Cure Light Wounds on your Special Abilities button) when resting. Bummer.

Small soloing 'cheaters'

If you really must have all that loot, then you can do the following trick: Gather up about twenty items and store them in some container. Then go grab one of the NPCs, have that NPC load up on the stuff you just stored, and then release that NPC. You can then meet up with the NPC later and grab the stuff from him or her; he will still have everything you gave him in the dungeon but he won't have received any of the experience points. You have to be a little careful with Imoen because it is hard to collect any stuff without killing any monsters or getting credit for both of you if you open a lock or disarm a trap. There's a few items she can haul out for you but not much.

If you are in a particular nasty spot and can't get through without help, consider hiring a specialist. Perhaps a Wizard or Druid to summon a few monsters, or a Thief to get by some traps (if you don't happen to be a Thief). Not truly solo, but still pretty close.

Baldur's Gate I Solo

I also made a page on running a solo Mage in Baldur's Gate I. It has many strategies, tactics and principles that can be applied here.
